Fungal Rash
A fungal rash is a skin infection caused by fungi, presenting as ring-shaped, itchy patches on the skin that usually flake at the edges. This infection can be contracted from animals, but it may also spread between people. In most cases, fungal rashes can be treated with antifungal creams.

Symptoms of Fungal Rash
Fungal rash typically appears as ring-shaped, itchy patches on areas such as the face, chest, arms, or legs. The edges of the rash are usually red, raised, dry, and may flake. Inside the ring, the skin may appear red and bumpy or look normal. The patches can vary in size, from a few millimeters to several centimeters, and may grow or merge. If an itchy rash occurs on the scalp, it might indicate a fungal infection, often resulting in bald, flaking areas on the scalp.
Causes of Fungal Rash
Fungal rash is caused by dermatophytes, a type of fungi that can penetrate the skin, especially when it is damaged or sensitive. Excessive sweating can weaken the skin’s protective barrier, increasing infection risk. The infection most commonly spreads from animals to humans but can occasionally spread between people.
Treatment
Fungal rash is typically treated with antifungal creams that can be bought from the pharmacy without prescription. If these are ineffective, prescription medications may be necessary. In widespread infections, a skin sample may be taken to confirm the diagnosis. Scalp infections are often managed in collaboration with a dermatologist.
Self-Care Instructions
You can reduce the risk of spreading the infection by following these precautions:
- Avoid direct contact with infected individuals or animals.
- Avoid close-contact sports if there’s a chance of infection.
- Ensure pets are properly treated if they are diagnosed with a fungal infection.
When to seek medical care?
Seek in-person medical care if the rash covers large areas of skin or if symptoms persist after two weeks of self-care.
